A properly built deck is nothing to look over. Recently in California 6 people sadly died in a deck collapse. Fortunately, for the most part, deck collapses can be avoided by regularly checking and inspecting your deck. Here are a few things to look for:
- Make sure the ledger board is secured to the home with lag bolts
- Test the railing – really push and pull on them (safely of course) to make sure they are secure
- make sure the posts rest on secure concrete footings and not the ground
- Regularly check for wood rot and other issues
- And, of course, be sure to have it properly inspected!

Termites in Virginia? What do Termites look like? Termites in Virginia are more common than some may think. So what do termites look like? More importantly, how can they be located before they cause too much damage?
One of the first things to consider is how termites work. They generally cause a great deal of damage, but the damage is very often very difficult to find and/or impossible to see. Termites tend to try to keep whatever they are destroying intact for as long as possible so they can live and work in it for as long as possible.
That being said, termite damage is usually inside walls, on the inner part of wood framing members, and not usually visible to the naked eye. So how can they be found?
There are several things that you can look for. First, mud tubes are the most common thing. Frass (a polite word for their fecal matter, garbage, and wood shavings), and wood damage. Termite damage tends to have frass packed into the tunnels, as is seen in the picture below. Questions? Contact us!
Are you building a new home and wondering if you should get a home inspection on it? Many people wonder the same thing. For some, they feel that the code enforcer’s inspection is enough. But is it really?
Consider what “code” is. It is not a high standard to which everyone is required to build to, it is actually a minimum to which people are required to build to. And unlike a home inspector, the code enforcer works for the municipality and not for you.

Is your home in a flood zone? Many people wonder this, especially when they are buying a home. So how can you be sure that the home you are purchasing is not in a flood zone? How can you protect your family and your investment?
Flood Zones – What You Can Do
One of the most important things you can do is research the property BEFORE you even go to look at it. One of the best flood zone tools that I have found is the FEMA Flood Zone Tool. Simply enter your address and then it will tell you what your flood zone risk level is.
After that, hire a qualified home inspector (such as myself) to perform a full home inspection and to check for possible flood damage.
